The Lion and the Mouse

A simple paragraph-style retelling of the old fable about kindness, courage, and help arriving from an unexpected friend.

The Story

One hot afternoon, a lion was sleeping under a tree in a quiet forest. The shade was cool, and the lion was very tired after walking for a long time. His great head rested on his paws, and his golden mane moved softly in the wind. Around him, the forest was calm and still.

A tiny mouse running near a sleeping lion under a tree

Near the same tree, a little mouse came out of a small hole in the ground. She was looking for food and did not notice the sleeping lion. She ran across the dry leaves, climbed over a root, and then, by mistake, ran right over the lion's paw.

The lion woke up at once. He opened his eyes, lifted his paw, and caught the little mouse gently but firmly. The mouse trembled with fear. To her, the lion looked as large as a hill. She thought her life was over.

The lion looked at the tiny mouse and gave a low growl. The mouse folded her small paws and begged him to let her go. She said that she had not meant to disturb him. She also promised that if he spared her life, she would help him one day.

At first, the lion laughed. He could not imagine how such a small creature could ever help the king of the forest. But the mouse looked so frightened and honest that the lion felt kind. He lifted his paw and let her run away.

The mouse thanked him again and again before she hurried back into the grass. The lion watched her go and smiled to himself. He did not think he would ever need help from a mouse, but he was glad he had shown mercy.

A small mouse chewing a rope net to free a kind lion

A few days later, hunters came into the forest and set a strong rope net near a narrow path. The lion did not see it. As he walked through the bushes, the net sprang up and trapped him. He pulled and twisted, but the ropes only became tighter around him.

The lion roared loudly. His voice shook the trees, but no other large animal came to help. The little mouse heard the roar from her hole. She knew that voice. At once, she ran toward the sound and found the lion caught in the net.

The mouse did not waste time. She climbed onto the ropes and began to bite them with her sharp teeth. One rope broke, then another, and then another. The lion stayed as still as he could while the little mouse worked bravely.

After some time, the net became loose. The lion pushed with his strong body and finally stepped free. He looked down at the mouse with surprise and gratitude. The little creature he had once spared had saved his life.

The lion thanked the mouse kindly. He understood that help can come from anyone, even someone small. From that day, the lion remembered that kindness is never wasted, and the mouse remembered that courage does not depend on size.
